Reflections from a first-timer at Lutsong

By Amy Yoelin

This year was my first time attending Lutsong, a three-day folk music festival in Lutsen, Minnesota. The National Park of Lake Superior Foundation was a sponsor of the event, which marked its third run. I was joined by hundreds of music and outdoor lovers from across the Midwest who came to the Caribou Highlands and North Shore Winery

The Stonebridge Singers from Grand Portage kicked off the weekend with a drum circle. Over a dozen artists from across the country came to perform at Lutsong. I was inspired to see artists supporting one another, joining each other on stage during sets. One of my favorite sets featured Nikki Lemire on harp and Haley E Rydell on violin. Together, they sounded incredible. To close out each night, singers and attendees gathered around a campfire to create a unique, collaborative sound.

Taking place outdoors with a scenic overlook of Lake Superior, Lutsong celebrates music and the environment. It was great to be amongst a crowd that appreciates Lake Superior. Despite a little rain and a handful of bug bites, Lutsong was a great success and fun experience. I’m excited about who will make an appearance next year! Take a listen to my favorite songs by artists who were at Lutsong. For a full line-up of the artists, click here.
