When winter wraps Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in its icy embrace, adventure seekers gather in Munising for one of the most extraordinary events in the region: Michigan Ice Fest.
Taking place each February at the stunning Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, this internationally renowned festival draws climbers to experience the unique thrill of ice climbing in one of the most scenic and challenging environments in the world.
This event isn’t just for seasoned adventurers - it’s an inclusive festival that offers something for everyone, whether you’re scaling icy pillars for the first time or simply watching in awe.
For over three decades, Bill Thompson, the heart and soul of Michigan Ice Fest, has introduced thousands of climbers to this awe-inspiring sport.
In a recent episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, hosts Walt Lindala and Frida Waara chatted with Bill about the festival’s humble beginnings, its incredible growth, and why Pictured Rocks is a must-visit destination for climbers from around the globe.
What is Ice Fest Michigan?

Michigan Ice Fest is an annual ice climbing event held at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising, Michigan. Renowned for its stunning frozen waterfalls, ice caves, and towering ice pillars over Lake Superior, this festival attracts climbers from all over the world.
The festival welcomes everyone - from complete beginners to seasoned climbers - with professional clinics, free presentations, and community gatherings.
It’s more than a climbing event; it’s a celebration of adventure, community, and the stunning winter beauty of Lake Superior. Pictured Rocks in winter is nothing short of magical and Michigan Ice Fest showcases the best of it with icy waterfalls, pristine snowy landscapes, and a vibrant, welcoming community.
As organizer Bill Thompson puts it, the festival blends challenge and camaraderie, making it a must-visit for adventurers of all levels.
“This is not an elitist sport—it’s people coming back to Munising, Michigan, year after year, having fun, interacting, and planning other trips to climb and adventure.”
History of Ice Fest Michigan
Ice Fest began in 1991 as a small gathering of about ten climbers. Bill Thompson took over in 1995, and the festival has grown exponentially since then. Today, it attracts more than 1,100 participants from 38 states and seven countries, making it one of the largest ice climbing festivals in the world.
“We started small, but now it’s an international event,” Bill explains. “It’s incredible to see how much it’s grown.”
The event is rooted in community and passion. As Bill notes, the festival’s growth has been fueled by the enthusiasm of climbers who return year after year, bringing friends, family, and their love for Pictured Rocks.
Why Ice Fest Michigan Is Unique

1. A World-Class Climbing Destination
Located along Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers some of the most unique ice climbing opportunities in the world. Pictured Rocks is famous for its dramatic ice formations, including frozen waterfalls, massive pillars, and intricate caves.
Imagine climbing massive ice formations with crashing waves below and the vibrant colors of Lake Superior as your backdrop. Bill Thompson puts it best:
“There’s nowhere in the world that you can go ice climbing over open water, with crashing waves and the beauty of Lake Superior.”
Even if you’re not climbing, the park’s beauty is worth the trip. Standing on the frozen shores of Lake Superior, surrounded by shimmering ice and the stillness of winter is an experience you won’t soon forget.
2. Ice Climbing for All Skill Levels
Whether you’re 8 or 78, Ice Fest Michigan welcomes climbers of all ages and abilities. Around 70% of participants are beginners, making it the perfect place to try ice climbing for the first time.
Climbers can choose from a variety of terrains, from easy-to-access "front country" ice formations to more remote "backcountry" climbs that require snowmobiles or skis to reach.
All necessary equipment is available at the festival and participants are paired with professional athletes who offer top-notch instruction.
“You’re getting the LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Michael Jordan of the climbing world teaching you,” Bill explains.
3. Community and Camaraderie
Ice Fest isn’t just about climbing—it’s about building connections. The festival includes inspiring presentations, morning coffee talks, and even fun activities like speed dating during Valentine’s weekend.
“This event has become a big family reunion,” Bill shares. “People come back year after year, not just to climb, but to connect.”
